HURIWA slams Northern Governors over 100months unpaid salaries, entitlements of New Nigerian Newspapers

HURIWA slams Northern Governors over 100months unpaid salaries, entitlements of New Nigerian Newspapers
A civil rights advocacy group, Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA), on Thursday, slammed Plateau State Governor and Chairman of the Northern Governors’ Forum, Simon Lalong, and his colleagues, for withholding the over 100 months entitlements of The New Nigerian Newspapers workers.
National Coordinator of HURIWA, Comrade Emmanuel Onwubiko, in a statement,  blamed the death of 100 workers of the company on the non-payment of their salary arrears and other benefits by Northern Governors.
The group said it was unfortunate that the Governors were enriching themselves with public funds, driving bulletproof cars with billions budgeted for their feeding allowance in the 2023 budget estimates that they are all submitting before their various Houses nof Assembly, yet they won’t pay workers their entitlement.
At a press briefing this week, leaders of the in-house Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists and National Union of Printing, Publishing and Paper Products Union Workers, on behalf of hundreds of the denied workers, said over 100 members have lost their lives to sicknesses while awaiting their withheld salaries as their children could no longer attend schools.
They lamented the slow pace of the process initiated in 2017 to sell assets of the company to pay off salary arrears of staff and other benefits and wondered why some company’s assets had been sold, but there was no move to pay workers’ entitlement.
They called on Lalong, to as a matter of urgency, to intervene and order disbursement of the fund to workers of the company to alleviate their hardships.
Onwubiko, while reacting to the disclosure, said: “The development is a sordid menace and embarrassing to Northern Governors who have no iota of shame in the first place. It is condemnable that the Northern Governors are enriching themselves at the expense of the masses and neglecting pensioners and journalists owed accumulated wages to be dying.
“Governor Simon Lalong, who incidentally is an All Progressives Congress Governor and the Director-General of the Tinubu-Shettima Presidential Campaign Council, should as a matter of alacrity, ensure the payment of these entitlements as the Nigerian electorate are watching the maltreatment of workers by the APC. A labourer is worthy of his wages.”

The SDP presidential candidate, Prince Adewole Adebayo has called on political actors to allow women make their contributions in politics by amending what needs to be amended, enforcing the electoral law and allowing the rule of law to prevail.
He made this known on Tuesday in Abuja, during the Voice of Women (VOW) 2022 Conference and Awards where presidential candidates were invited to speak on their plans and commitment to Nigerian women.
Adebayo said, in order to address the issue of low participation of women in politics, two things must be removed – violence and cheating.
“Two things have dominated our politics, violence, and obscene use of money. Women don’t do well in those two vices. So if we want to address participation of women in politics, and participation in decision making, we must remove violence from politics and cheating. Women are not good cheats”, he said.
“When we seek advice, when we seek trust, we go to the women, but when we seek power, we don’t give power to the women. So I believe that if we amend our ways, and enforce the electoral law and have rule of law, women will naturally dominate”.
The SDP presidential candidate, while outlining his plans concerning women if he is elected into power, noted that there are structural issues that needed to be taken care of.
He said the right, privileges and prospects of women in the society should not depend on which government is in power, nor on which politician signs an undertaking because the Nigerian constitution guarantee rights for women.
He also noted that the objective condition that is created in a country will determine whether women are going to live to their full potential.
“If we approach women as citizens and we do that very well most of ours problems will be solved. If we approach women as humans and we do that very well, most of our problems will be solved”, he said.
He said the society has been structured in a way that men create problems and destruction and the women are left to build; but this should be stopped.
He said, “I was a United Nations and ECOWAS appointed Commissioner in Liberia after the war, and I noticed one thing very clearly, all the people who caused the war, none was a woman.
The generals who commanded the war none was a woman, but most victims of the war, were women; and when we came to rebuild that country, most of those who came to contribute to the development and rebuilding of that country were women”.
Adebayo promised to enforce the rule of law so that women will be given a voice in the grand scheme of things, which will in turn ensure progress for the nation.
“I will enforce the law, and I will ensure that rule of law prevails; and when that happens, women will be the beneficiary and the country will progress”.
Prince Adebayo attended the conference in company of his entourage – Sen. Ugochukwu Uba, Hon. Richard Oriri, Pastor Ade Alabi, Chief Godwin Osigbeme and Mr Patrick.
Other presidential candidates present, were, Al-Mustapha of AAC, Kashim Shettima of APC representing Bola Tinubu , Peter Obi of LP, Malik Ado-Ibrahim of YPP, Dumebi Kachikwu of ADC.
A copy of the Womanifesto was handed over to each candidate

SDP Presidential Candidate Vows To Ensure Women Inclusive Government

SDP Presidential Candidate Vows To Ensure Women Inclusive Government

Presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party, Adewale Adebayo has said that when the Nigerian electorate enthroned the party in 2023, it would explore the asset of Nigerian women to manage national resources for a better Nigeria.

He said this at the three days conference with Presidential candidates organized by the Nigerian Women Search for Good Governance in Abuja.

He said the managerial asset if the Nigerian woman has been experienced by him and an employer of labour and he believes that such asset would turn the fortunes of Nigeria around when deployed for national growth and development.

His words: “If you want to empower families, you have to empower women. I’m also an employer of labour. I became an employer of labour when I was 22 years old. I have been employing people overtime. Overtime, I have employed women and men.

“If you find out from organisations that I’ve been running for many years before I thought I will be in politics, 80-85 per cent of my managers are women.

“It is not because they know how to dress elegantly, it’s because they know how to manage and care. The truth of the matter is that Nigerian society and the Nigerian government don’t look alike.

“In Nigerian society, the women carry the verdict and the women run the show but in the Nigerian government, the men take everything. This has to change. If we can listen to women, we will know the problem of Nigeria and solve them.”

He maintained that where the Nigeria government allowed the woman to deploy her housewife skills in managing public resources, Nigeria would be saved from many troubles.

He said, “A government should be like a housewife. If you want to have a government that will work in Nigeria, you have to fashion the government like a housewife. The government will wake up and think of how people will eat and go to school.

“With the way I approach governance, women have a major role to play because I grew up well taken care off. In fact, my attitude to governance arose from the fact that I grew up in innocence.

“The problems of government did not affect me that much because of the family from which I came.

Adebayo maintained that the empowerment of the Nigerian family through multiple opportunities affected by the enabling environment for all kinds of skills will make the country bloom again.

“And my aim, therefore, is to make sure that however long I stay in power or government, whether long or short, I will empower families. Because failure to empower families is the problem of Nigeria,” Adebayo stated
